An entrepreneurial spirit

Student of the Week: Genesis Garza

“I would like to have my own brand someday, so I think studying marketing would help give me the experience I’ll need. I'll have an understanding of what to do when it comes to marketing and entrepreneurship.”

STC Student of the Week Genesis Garza

Genesis Garza’s entrepreneurial spirit and desire for independence is what ultimately drew her to pursue an associate degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Marketing at South Texas College.

The Donna native said she was undeclared for two semesters and explored the fields of cosmetology and criminal justice before committing to her future career.

“I couldn’t make up my mind, but then I decided to go with my instinct,” Garza said. “I really want to be an entrepreneur and make something of my own.”

Garza said her enjoyment of makeup and cosmetics sparked her desire to one day create and run her own brand and STC courses are helping her become well-rounded and learn different business principles.

“I would like to have my own brand someday, so I think studying marketing would help give me the experience I’ll need,” Garza said. “I'll have an understanding of what to do when it comes to marketing and entrepreneurship.”

STC offers Business Administration degrees that specialize in accounting, management and marketing to prepare students for entry into the profession. The programs prepare students to explore innovative ideas, develop management and leadership skills, and gain an understanding of industry strategies.

At the Mid-Valley campus Garza said she joined both the Student Government Association and the Student Leadership Program, which helped strengthen her communication skills. Something she believes will help her in her marketing classes and future career.

Along with the variety of student activities offered, Garza said she also appreciates the proximity of the Mid-Valley campus to her hometown and the availability of services and facilities. From the student union to private study areas, Garza said she enjoys finding a spot to study, unwind and connect with other students.

“I like hanging around the study rooms during my breaks where it's chill and you can do your work,” she said. “You can hang around here when you don't feel like being around the crowd.”

Garza encourages potential students who may feel undecided about their own future to take the leap and follow their heart and interests.

“There’s so many opportunities for students at STC,” Garza said. “Right now, someone may be at home this summer thinking about how they want to look for something that interests them. I would encourage them to take the chance to find the right road to where they want to go. They have to think about what they need to move forward and what makes them want to keep working toward their dreams.”
