Marlyn Pena, 41, a Mission native is balancing work, school and family while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership at South Texas College (STC).

Working part-time at STC’s Enrollment Center has also sparked her interest in pursuing a career in higher education and helping students along the way.

“Everyone I have encountered at STC has been patient and very helpful, very welcoming,” Pena said.

Pena mentions the support she has received from faculty, staff and various departments since her first day at STC has made a difference in her college journey. The experience as both a student and employee has given Pena a better understanding of the challenges students face. She hopes to use what she has learned to help those who may be going through similar struggles.

“Balancing school and work while raising three children has not always been easy,” she said. "As a single mother, I sometimes wait until my children are asleep before starting my homework and studying, even if it means staying up late.”

She said, finding a quiet place at home helps her stay focused and get her schoolwork done.

Pena earned her associate degree from STC in spring 2026, 100% online Technology was one of the challenges, she said she faced along the way.

”I was not used to using computers every day and I do not consider myself very tech-savvy, but I have learned, and I’m not afraid to ask questions,” Pena said.

Pena said her professors have been understanding and helpful, and she has also visited STC’s Centers for Learning Excellence for tutoring and additional support.

Math was one of the subjects she has struggled with, but mentions the tutors have always been patient and willing to help.

“If I need help with something, I don’t hold back. I ask a lot of questions,” Pena said.

Pena encourages other students to take advantage of the resources available at STC and not be afraid to ask for help.

Outside of school and work, Pena goes to the gym and participates in 5K events. Pena states staying active helps relieve her stress and clear her mind while balancing the demands of college.

Pena chose STC because it is close to home, allowing her to care for her children, work on campus and continue her education without having to leave the region.

Pena’s college journey has also become a family accomplishment. Pena is proud that her oldest daughter graduated from STC this spring as a dual credit student, a moment Pena holds close to heart.

As she continues working toward her bachelor’s degree, Pena hopes to be a role model for her children and other students.

“Age does not matter. Try your best. There is no limit on what you can learn,” Pena said.

For Pena, her journey is proof that it is never too late to go back to school and work toward a goal. As she continues balancing work, school and motherhood, she hopes to remind other students to keep going and not give up.
