BASOL student impacts the lives of children through STC

Student of the Week: Vanessa Montalvo

In honor of celebrating teachers for the month of May, South Texas College recognizes student of the week, Vanessa Montalvo.

Currently a student at South Texas College, Vanessa has completed her associate degree in education and will now pursue her Bachelors of Applied Science in Organizational Leadership.

She says she started with an education degree because she enjoys working with children.

“I chose teaching because I worked at a daycare taking care of children for three years, I am also with the Cub Scouts of America,” Montalvo said. “I love to instill knowledge in kids.”

Vanessa says she was inspired to become an educator by a teacher she had in school.

“My high school teacher Ms. Martin was the one that motivated me to be a teacher,” expressed Vanessa. “I saw how passionate she was about teaching by watching her work with other students.”

Vanessa says the bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership at STC is full of new beginnings.

This degree focuses on skills that will help prepare students for a leadership position in business, government, non-profit, or educational organizations.

“I am now in the BASOL program,” said Vanessa. “It is a program that is challenging and opens the doors to many new possibilities.”

After Vanessa graduates, she says she would like to make a difference in children’s lives working in a school.

“I ultimately want to end up being a principal for an elementary school,” explained Vanessa. “I feel like you are able to shape them and be more interactive with the children.”

Overall, Vanessa says her time at STC has been terrific and says she has enjoyed it.

“My experience at STC has been awesome,” said Vanessa. “I started last year and was really involved as a vice president of the education club, vice president of student government, and Spanish club.”

Vanessa has a message for students wanting to complete their goals.

“Even if you think it’s too late or that you’re too old, you can always go to college,” she said.

“My experience at STC has been awesome,” said Vanessa. “I started last year and was really involved as a vice president of the education club, vice president of student government, and Spanish club.”
