BAT student says every student is meant to graduate

Student of the Week: Daniel Cantu

For Daniel Cantu, graduating from South Texas College will fulfill a goal he has harbored since graduating high school in 2011.

Originally from Rio Grande City, Daniel said financial considerations prompted him to work for his degree in small increments over the course of eight years. It enabled him to receive an associate degree in Psychology before pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Technology in Computer and Information Technologies (CIT).

Now close to completing his bachelor’s degree, Daniel says he hopes to enter a career in IT or computer networking.

“The program presented a very good opportunity, and I gained a lot of great experiences from online classes,” he said. “As I made my way through the program I was introduced to many great instructors who sparked my interest in different forms of IT.”

"Teachers have prepared us to gain the education we need to pursue other areas we need. This includes paraprofessionals too. Without them, we wouldn’t know where to go or what career to pursue. I appreciate that they contribute their own experience and skills, and they play a big part in their students’ lives.”

The BAT degree is designed to prepare students with relevant, technical knowledge of CIT practices, in order to provide solutions for real-world problems and technical support for computer-based information systems. Technology-oriented coursework forms the core requirements for the program, with an emphasis on the application and implementation of current technologies.

Potential careers include opportunities as computer and information system managers, computer network architects, information technology project managers, network and computer system administrators, and computer network specialists.

“For students, I would tell them that if they have the ambition, then they absolutely have to finish,” Daniel said. “Every student here is meant to graduate, so if you’re a student here, you can’t get discouraged even if others have finished before you.

“For those who have children or are single parents, I admire you all,” he said. “One class down means you are one step closer to getting your degree. You are meant to finish college.”

Daniel says he also has a message for those teachers who have enabled him to move one step closer towards his goals.

“Without teachers, we would not know what to study. Teachers have prepared us to gain the education we need to pursue other areas we need. This includes paraprofessionals too,” Daniel said. “Without them, we wouldn’t know where to go or what career to pursue. I appreciate that they contribute their own experience and skills, and they play a big part in their students’ lives.”
