At just 23, Weslaco native, Phillip Perez, is completing an associate degree in Nursing from South Texas College and is set to graduate this December.

Perez said it was in high school that he began to realize the medical field is something he could see himself going into.

“The way STC prepares people for the workforce and the real world is something that I need.” Said Perez.

He added that the ADN program is a big step in his faith and to serve people and the community through healthcare.

“STC is what I needed for my current path in life. I had tried another university, but STC aligned better,” he said.

With a love for school, Perez reviews lectures prior to attending class to ensure he’s ready to learn.

“I like to know what the lecture will be about so I can interact and participate in the classroom,” said Perez. “I love coming to school, I love learning.”

Perez also enjoys using the Health Science Professions Campus gym to destress and maintain focus.

Additionally, Perez works part-time with Student Activities and Wellness department at his campus, and he is currently also the vice president of the Baptist Student Ministry Club, where he hosts bible studies and welcomes students to be heard and understood.

Upon graduating, Perez will begin his new career at DHR Health as a nurse technician, before earning his license in registered nursing early 2027.

“I chose STC because it is a well-known, reputable college, and I needed something that could set me up in the workforce immediately,” Perez said.

Perez plans to continue his education at STC in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Until then, Perez looks forward to commencement and celebrating with his biggest supporters – his parents.

“My parents have sacrificed so much for me and have been greatly supportive throughout my studies,” he said. “They have been my greatest support system.”
