Cybersecurity degree a journey to excellence

Student of the Week: Mark Cardenas

To honor my family’s sacrifices, I committed myself to academic excellence. And I’m proud to say that this past May I earned my first associate in business administration and I’m ready to earn another one.

STC Student of the Week Mark Cardenas

Mark Cardenas, a 22-year-old native of the Rio Grande Valley, has chosen South Texas College as his academic home, shaping his journey to excellence.

Cardenas’ commitment to his education has always been a significant priority in his life. His journey is filled with determination despite personal challenges at home, and he is now working toward his second associate degree in (what program).

His fascination with cybersecurity stems from his dream of creating a new type of cell phone and after a conversation with a friend, who mentioned STC’s Cybersecurity program, he wasted no time and enrolled again to learn as much as he can about the field.

And as a first-generation college student, Cardenas’ accomplishments are a tribute to the sacrifices made by his family. His older brother's decision to put aside his education and become the family caretaker when their mother became ill. It served as a reminder of the strength of family bonds.

“To honor my family’s sacrifices, I committed myself to academic excellence,” said Cardenas. “And I’m proud to say that this past May I earned my first associate in business administration and I’m ready to earn another one.”

Cardenas’ dedication extends beyond the classroom. His involvement in campus life as a work study with Student Activities reflects his drive for excellence.

He said his life experiences have instilled leadership qualities he honors, setting an excellent example for his family and peers.

“I find immense joy in contributing to the campus community,” said Cardenas. “My involvement in student activities has been particularly transformative.”

His participation has granted him the opportunity to embark on new experiences, including a trip to Washington, D.C.

Cardenas was one of only two individuals chosen to represent STC for a visit to the nation’s capital. The event marked the college’s first invitation to speak directly to representatives of Congress, and made he made his mark by engaging in discussions about critical topics such as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, funding for work studies and enhancing student benefits.

“I am thankful and grateful for the faculty and staff at the college for making STC a welcoming environment and a place that feels like a second home for me,” he said. “With a heart full of appreciation, I am excited to start the fall semester and graduate again in two years. A bright future awaits, and I look forward to the remarkable journey that is coming up.”
