Finding his path in technology through curiosity
Student of the Week: Arturo Cuellar Lucero
If you look around, it’s all technology. From cell phones to social media, we’re all connected.
At 21 years old, Arturo Cuellar Lucero is entering his second semester at South Texas College (STC) with a passion for technology, a love for learning and a desire to help others.
His interest in technology began at a young age, inspired by the American sci-fi series, “The Flash,” and since then has grown into a passion for computer science, engineering - and robotics.
“If you look around, it’s all technology,” Lucero said. “From cell phones to social media, we’re all connected.”
Lucero has a clear vision for the academic goals he wants to accomplish in his career. He is currently pursuing an associate degree in Computer Science and plans to continue his studies at STC for a bachelor’s degree.
Lucero said math is another important part of his education and is, by far, his favorite subject. He enjoys learning about mathematical equations and finding solutions and believes it is something everyone uses in their daily lives.
“Math is a daily essential that we all need”, Lucero said. “We use it to count money, drive, pay bills, shop…math is all around us.”
Arturo Lucero chose STC because it allowed him to stay close to home while continuing his education.
Before beginning college, Lucero said he faced a difficult decision between pursuing his education or joining the U.S. Marines. Although college was not part of his plans, he ultimately chose to enroll and begin his career path at STC.
Now, balancing school, work and personal responsibilities, he has learned that the key to success is discipline and time management. He hopes to be a positive role model for other students and says many of his peers often seek him for help.
For Lucero, college is more than the classroom. He wants to make his time at STC a memorable experience, which led him to become involved with the Jag Unit Social Media Club. Through the new student club, students come together across STC’s six campuses to showcase their creativity by utilizing photography and video for STC’s official social media accounts.
Looking ahead, Lucero hopes to explore his interest in robotics and gain more hands-on experience.
“I want to see if I can take a robotics class,” Lucero said. “That is my next goal, to use my knowledge in math and computers to build a robot.”
