Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

Student of the Week: Taylor Delgado

You make conscious decisions every day of your life that can lead to your goals or stray further away from them. The only advice I can give is to push yourself every single day, because growth can only be accomplished by getting yourself out of your own comfort zone.

Ten years since first attending South Texas College, Taylor Delgado said he recently returned to college as a promise to his young family.

With a commitment to his children, wife and career, Delgado said that they motivate him and push out any thoughts of failure. With years of experience as an Avionics Electrical Technician for the United States Marine Corps, Taylor said he plans to apply his experience to a degree in Engineering.

“I chose STC because I am currently an active duty Marine stationed in Camp Pendleton, CA and STC offered affordable classes and online courses through distance education,” Delgado said. “My pride in my home town of Rio Grande City and the Rio Grande Valley also motivated me to attend STC instead of a local community college where I am located.”

First entering STC as a high school student in 2011, Delgado said he recently returned to school again in spring 2022.

Now recently completing his first semester back in college since 2016, Delgado said he was absolutely impressed by the quality of professors at STC. Through their motivation, Delgado said he was encouraged to continue his military career, while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in order to earn a commission as an Officer in the Marines

“As a full-time active duty Marine and father of two, I had several challenges I faced, and my professors were there for me every step of the way. I really enjoyed the semester and look forward to starting my classes this summer,” Delgado said. “Committing myself to college has been no easy task. Like many others, I have work and family obligations to uphold, but I used those obligations to fuel my success. It's my children, my wife and my career progression that motivate me and restrict any thoughts of failure or giving up.”

The Associate of Science degree with a field of study in Engineering offers students the opportunity to take a core curriculum of general education with an emphasis on Engineering. At the present time, a high percentage of all the technical and managerial positions in industry are occupied by engineers.

The program at STC also closely parallels the first two years of education students receive at most engineering schools. In fact, many STC program graduates transfer to an engineering school and obtain a degree in one of the various engineering fields.

“Success is something that only you can attain for yourself,” Delgado said. “You make conscious decisions every day of your life that can lead to your goals or stray further away from them. The only advice I can give is to push yourself every single day, because growth can only be accomplished by getting yourself out of your own comfort zone.”
