Headstart to healthcare

Student of the Week: Nydia Escobedo

Nydia Escobedo likes to help. So much to the point that she has decided she wants her career to be in the line of medicine and health.

The Mid Valley high school student has entered South Texas College’s Dual Enrollment Medical Science Academy.

The Academy is designed to encourage area high school students into the health care professions by providing college course-work and health-related opportunities that will motivate, educate, and prepare students for higher education in the field of medicine.

“I picked DEMSA because I want to be in the medical field later on,” She said. “I want to be a biology major and hopefully graduate from medical school.”

Her drive to help others along with enjoying science has pushed her in the direction of healthcare.

“I always want to help others and I believe science and being a part of medicine will be one of the ways I can help others,” She said. “I want to help the health of others, make sure they’re okay. I’m not sure exactly what I want to do, I was thinking a radiologist or something.”

“Don’t be afraid to take a risk. I was nervous to be in DEMSA but I’m so proud to be in it,” Escobedo said. “Sometimes it takes risk to get to better places and I’m sure it will take me to a better place. It’s teaching me a lot and I know others will get a similar experience.”
STC Student of the Week Nydia Escobedo

Escobedo now attends most schools at STC’s Mid Valley Campus, earning college credit and her high school diploma simultaneously.

“I believe education is important for me because it will take me to a better place in life, I believe it will help me achieve that,” Escobedo said.

Her experience with STC has been a testimonial to the services offered to dual enrollment students and the greater student body.

“I believe STC is helping me a lot because a lot of the professors I have are pretty cool,” She said. “They’re amazing, they explain everything very well and actually answer my questions. We also have this CLE (Centers for Learning Excellence) and I get so much help from them. Those are the resources I like, they help me get good grades.”

Escobedo is glad to be working alongside her peers, high achieving dual enrollment students.“I’m able to be in college and at the same time in high school and getting to know more people that are my age,” She said. “To be with them and have the same interest in science is very cool because we get to help others and get to help each other. I already made friends in DEMSA so it’s pretty cool. I represent my high school being a DEMSA student.”

Her message to other students who are considering joining one of the high school
