Discovering a New Path

For South Texas College student Joanna Caldera, college has been a journey of discovering new passions, while also staying true to the values that have shaped her from the very beginning.

A 20-year-old Biology major from McAllen, Caldera planned to pursue a career as a veterinarian, inspired by her lifelong love for animals and the many cats and dogs her family cared for growing up.

"I've always loved animals," Caldera said. "My mom had a lot of cats and dogs, and now I have cats of my own."

As she progressed through her coursework, however, Caldera realized her interests extended beyond the sciences. Drawing from accounting classes she completed in high school and inspired by her sister's experience as an accountant, she began exploring business as another career path.

"I was already familiar with numbers, and it really sparked my interest," she said. "Now I want to pursue Operations Management and earn a payroll certificate after I graduate."

Caldera will pursue a bachelor’s degree in Operations Management also from STC, after completing her associated degree this fall.

Although her career goals have changed, Caldera says her experience in the Biology program has helped prepare her for success.

"The classes were challenging," she said. "But I got through them, and it made me stronger."

Outside the classroom, Caldera has found another reason to love STC. She has worked at the college's Call Center for the past year as a work-study employee, where she says the supportive environment has made a lasting impact.

"The people honestly make STC a great place," Caldera said. "When you're surrounded by good people, you really start to love it here."

She credits her supervisor, Coordinator for College Connections Brenda Moreno, for helping make her experience a positive one.

"She's really understanding and always so kind," Caldera said. "I appreciate everything she's done for me."

Looking ahead, Caldera hopes to continue building her career while remaining part of the STC family.

"I'd like to keep working here," she said. "I'm familiar with it, I enjoy what I do and it's become a place where I feel comfortable."

Whether her future leads her into business or back toward biology, Caldera is grateful for the opportunities STC has provided and is excited for the next chapter of her journey.
