Inspired to serve others

At 21 years old, Saul Alejandro Martinez is pursuing his passion for helping others through the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program at South Texas College (STC).

A Donna native, Martinez said his interest in the medical field began in middle school and was inspired by his mother, who works as a medical assistant. His passion for helping others has continued to guide him as he works toward his career in healthcare.

“My parent’s support has played an important role in my education and has helped me continue pursuing my goals,” said Martinez.

Martinez also said he recently faced a death in the family, making it a difficult time as he continues to balance the demands of nursing school.

“I’ve developed study habits that keep me on track, including avoiding procrastination and using a to-do list to stay organized with my assignments and deadlines, especially when things become challenging,” he said.

Martinez is set to graduate from STC’s ADN program this semester and plans to continue his education at STC in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.

“Having a study partner in the program has helped me stay disciplined and better understand the coursework,” said Martinez. “When I need additional help, I also visit the Center for Learning Excellence (CLE) for tutoring on campus, which has been a great resource outside of the classroom.”

The simulation hospital located on the fourth floor of STC’s Health Science Profession Campus, he said, has allowed him to gain hands-on experience and implement what he has learned in the classroom.

Adding to his college experience, Martinez is also active with the Student Government Association (SGA) at the Health Science Professions Campus.

Martinez’s interest and active participation as a student leader also gives him opportunities to attend leadership conferences with the support of the STC Student Activities and Wellness department.

“Being selected to represent STC at the conference, gave me the chance to gain new knowledge and develop skills to become a strong leader,” he said.

Looking ahead, Martinez hopes to continue growing as a leader and be someone other students can look up to. He wants to lend a hand, show kindness and lead by example while continuing to work toward his career in nursing.

“I just hope to lead by example, believe in others and listen to others hopes and dreams,” Martinez said. “I feel that a good leader, not only teaches, but also listens.”
