Kinesiology student sets the bar high for career goals

Student of the Week: Marlee Canales

With determination and a passion for athletics, Marlee Canales says she is excited to go after a career in sports.

Currently a sophomore at South Texas College, Marlee is pursuing an Associate of Arts in Kinesiology. She is slated to graduate in the fall of 2019.

“I decided to pursue a degree in kinesiology because there is a variety of options I can choose from,” explained Marlee. “I thought I would give it a chance, and it has turned out to be exactly what I wanted.”

The kinesiology program at South Texas College prepares students to meet their desired goals and to seek opportunities to be advocates for healthy lifestyles.

Prior to becoming a student at STC, Marlee says she has always loved playing on sports teams and being a competitor.

“I started playing sports when I was six years old at my boys and girls club,” expressed Marlee. “In high school, I played different sports including volleyball, basketball, softball, and track.”

Marlee says she discovered her passion for sports after playing in a softball league.

“Once I started playing, I realized I had a lot of potential,” expressed Marlee. “I also realized I loved being outside, I loved making my coaches proud, and I just fell in love with it.”

“If you really want it, you can get it by motivation and determination,” said Marlee. “Put time and effort into your studies and make sure you have a support group.”

After Marlee graduates from STC with an associates degree, she says she wants to stay at STC and pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership, and hopefully transfer for a masters degree in sports medicine.

Marlee says she has big plans once everything is said and done.

“I want to work with the educational board either at a high school, college, or community,” explained Marlee. “I would like to manage sports, hopefully be a coordinator or a supervisor.”

Marlee has a message for students trying to accomplish their goals.

“If you really want it, you can get it by motivation and determination,” said Marlee. “Put time and effort into your studies and make sure you have a support group.”
