STC music student fine-tunes a career in education

Student of the Week: Laisha Nunez

Laisha Nuñez says following her dream into a rewarding career has been one the most exciting experiences she has ever been a part of.

Born in McAllen but raised in Reynosa, Laisha said she began practicing music on her own without formal training. Now studying for her Associate of Arts in Music at South Texas College, Laisha said she would love to enter a career in music education.

Starting at the age of seven, Laisha said she began singing in the choir at church. That experience and countless hours of practice enabled her to enter STC in 2018 as a voice major. She plans to graduate in 2021.

“I didn’t study music growing up, and there really isn’t any type of music school in Reynosa, all I knew was that I loved music,” Laisha said. “Even better would be finding a career that would let me teach all those things I learned on my own growing up.”

“To all students pursuing this degree, I would tell them that they have to focus on whatever makes them better. If you’re doing something you love keep going. It’s so exciting when you follow your dreams.”

The Associate of Arts in Music Degree focuses on establishing a solid music foundation in music theory, music literature, applied instrumental and voice lessons, piano proficiency, and participation in solo performances as well as various music ensembles.

These foundational studies are in preparation and designed for transferability to higher education institutions by the serious music student wishing to complete a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music Degree.

Laisha says the Music program at STC has enabled her to gain the right experience before transferring to UTRGV to eventually receive her bachelor degree.

“To all students pursuing this degree, I would tell them that they have to focus on whatever makes them better,” Laisha said. “If you’re doing something you love keep going. It’s so exciting when you follow your dreams.”
