Student of the week Jaime Perez

With determination and the willpower to make something of himself, Jaime Perez shares that after endless conversations on the importance of higher education and having encouragement from friends and family, he enrolled at South Texas College.

“STC recruiters visited my high school and explained how great of a college STC was for students who come from lower income families,” said Jaime. “That’s when I made up my mind and said I’m going to do this. I really did not want to go to college because at first, I wanted to go to UTRGV, but financially it was not within my family’s means. Then, STC happened and I knew this was my chance.”

Today, Jaime is a teacher in the making at South Texas College. He is currently working on obtaining his associate degree in secondary education and expects to graduate December 2018. His overall goal is to become a college professor or high school teacher. Additionally, he plans to go back for a master’s degree.

“I’m doing this because I want to make myself proud and also the people around me,” said Jaime.

Jaime shares with fellow students: “No matter your circumstance, you just have to keep on going. Do not let those negative people bring you down or tell you you’re not good enough. You should take those negative vibes and make it become your motivation. We all have the potential to make something of ourselves do not be hesitant to become something great.”

Top accomplishments:

“One of my biggest accomplishments is being here at STC because I'll be the first one in my family to graduate with an associate degree and hopefully in 2020, with my bachelor's.”
