Computer science student eyes the ‘next revolution’

Student of the Week: Miguel Coy

Miguel Coy believes there is an exciting future ahead for computing, and hopes to be a part of something that has the potential to improve the lives for billions of people around the world.

Immersed in technology since he was young, Miguel says his passion for computing has led him to seek an associate degree in Computer Science at South Texas College. He now hopes to graduate by May 2020.

“I love technology and I love the future and if I could somehow have an impact on that, that would be great,” he said. “Just having the opportunity to work in the field is my dream.”

Miguel says he is drawn to the hardware side of computing.

While some students may be drawn to software, Miguel says he is fascinated by the inner workings within the machines themselves. Hardware includes the physical components of a computer including microchips, computer data storage, CPU, or motherboard

“I definitely think about the possibilities,” Miguel said. “I think about the future and I think about how much better our lives could become, how much our lives could be improved through recent breakthroughs in quantum computing or even Artificial Intelligence. I hope we get there in my lifetime. I know there are many people working on it and I am hopeful. This is the next revolution.”

The Computer Science Department at STC provides quality programs that will empower students to develop and obtain the knowledge, skills, and best practices that are necessary for careers or further studies in the fields of computer science and computer information systems.

For students seeking to enter the field, Miguel says the realm of computing is really not that complicated. What is important he says is having the dedication to see your dreams come to life.

“I think a lot about dedication and it really goes for everything in life. Because if you want something, and if you try your absolute best, then I really believe that you can achieve anything you want to achieve,” he said. “This field is really not that complicated, it’s just a lot of abstract thinking, but if you can imagine things in your mind, and if you’re really good at visualizing what is actually happening inside the computer, that’s all you need.”
