Rising from Adversity

Student of the Week: Matthew Flores

“It has taken me 14 years to get back into it. Life will always throw you curve balls, but don’t let those curve balls define you. You can arise from whatever adversities come your way."

Being from a music family, Matthew Flores knew from an early age where his career would take him.

Now returning to college after 14 years, Matthew said he is more motivated than ever to take a lifelong passion to the next level. He is currently pursuing is an Associate of Arts in Music with a concentration on guitar at South Texas College.

“I chose STC because of the amazing guitar program they have, and the tuition is very affordable,” Matthew said. “It’s a small college, which makes it a great place to start your career. The smaller class size helps me be more focused and more interactive with my professors.”

The Associate of Arts in Music Degree focuses on establishing a solid music foundation in music theory, music literature, applied instrumental and voice lessons, piano proficiency, and participation in solo performances as well as various music ensembles.

These foundational studies are in preparation and designed for transferability to higher education institutions by the serious music student wishing to complete a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music Degree.

Music ensembles are open for participation to the general student body by permission of the ensemble director.

“I’ve had such a good experience here at STC. Everyone here has been extremely helpful since day one. That’s very important for students just entering college. My professors have been helpful in keeping me very motivated and positive and they are very easy to talk to."

After he completes his degree at STC, Matthew plans on transferring to UTRGV for his Bachelor’s in Music.

“Practice, practice, practice! This is the approach I am taking on this journey,” he said. “It’s something that was taught to me at an early age by my father who also is a musician. My family are the ones who have really motivated me. I want my kids to know how important school is.”

As a message to his peers, Matthew says it’s never too late to return to college.

“Never give up, but if you do, it’s never too late to pick up where you left off,” he said. “It has taken me 14 years to get back into it. Life will always throw you curve balls, but don’t let those curve balls define you. You can arise from whatever adversities come your way."
