I can honestly say that STC was one of the best choices I ever made for my studies. I want to make a great difference in my community and with my future patients.

“It was the best day of my life to the start of my academic career,” said Glendy Saenz who was admitted into STC’s Nursing Vocational program last fall.

The double-major who was patiently waiting for the news knew this would go hand in hand in becoming a psychiatric nurse.

From an early age, she played caretaker for her grandmother who suffered from arthritis, hypertension, and diabetes.

When Saenz’s caretaker role grew stronger, she realized it was a profession she wanted to pursue.

“I was her little nurse aid at home and seeing her in that situation, I just wanted to make sure I was leaving a positive impact on her,” said Saenz.

Now the 21-year-old is working on her second major since graduating last fall with her Associate of Arts in Psychology.

Saenz is involved in her community as president of the Psychology Club at the Starr campus.

“I was so fascinated with the field and the club that it got me thinking ‘Why not use both degrees that will help me become a psychiatric nurse?’ which is my ultimate goal,” she said.

As a Rio Grande City resident, she wants families of the area not to wait until the brink of an illness to ask for help.

“There are so many regards in health care that some families may not often seek it because they’re uninsured or for other reasons, but I want them to know that the health care field is for everybody,” she said. “I want them to reach out and not wait until the brink of a serious illness; I want them to be taken care of and that is what this field is for.”

STC’s Vocational Nursing program is three semesters long and offers classroom instruction and related clinical practice in the four basic areas of nursing care: adults, mothers and newborns, children and the elderly. Graduates of this program will have a wide array of opportunities for providing nursing care for patients in structured health care settings.

Saenz is taking pre-requisites for the Vocational Nursing program this spring to become a Licensed Vocation Nurse (LVN).

She hopes to earn an Associate Degree in Nursing (LVN/RN transition) then a bachelor's in nursing and psychology.

“I can honestly say that STC was one of the best choices I ever made for my studies. I want to make a great difference in my community and with my future patients,” said Saenz.
