STC alumna Cristina Wilson returns from Operation New Dawn in Kuwait

South Texas College alumna and U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Cristina Wilson returned from a one-year deployment during Operation New Dawn in Kuwait on July 25, 2012. Wilson acted as a Significant Actions (SIGACT) Manager during the U.S. military’s Operation New Dawn that scaled down forces and equipment in Iraq, and was also chosen to be the Army’s Sexual Harassment / Assault Response & Prevention Program (SHARP) Coordinator. She was one of 270 soldiers from 39 different states, two countries, and one U.S. territory that formed a team at the SIGACT base in Kuwait.

After a year away from her family and friends, South Texas College alumna and U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Cristina Wilson returned home to the Rio Grande Valley in late July and began the process of getting to know her loved ones again. Wilson, who is married to STC Gateway to College Program Director Michael Wilson and the mother of a 13-year-old son and 17-year-old daughter, was deployed to Kuwait in September 2011 to act as a Significant Actions (SIGACT) Manager during the U.S. military’s Operation New Dawn that scaled down forces and equipment in Iraq. STC Alumni and Friends mixer Nov. 10

South Texas College’s Alumni and Friends organization is holding its fall mixer on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the college’s Pecan Campus Cooper Center for Communication Arts located at 3200 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. Former South Texas College student and Rio Grande City native Monique Estelle De Pau earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Development and Family Studies from Texas Tech University College of Human Sciences in May 2011. She is currently pursuing a master’s in occupational therapy at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. A native of Mexico, Hector Morales immigrated to the Rio Grande Valley when he was a young boy. He attended Sharyland High School and graduated in 2002. Most people who know Hector will tell you he is a pretty outgoing and very social individual. Juanita Sylvia Abrego-Araiza, a graduate of South Texas College, was featured on NBC’s Today Show recently. Abrego-Araiza, a youth counselor in the Rio Grande Valley, was the subject of the show’s monthly AARP “Your Life Calling” segment. She was interviewed in early December 2010 by renowned journalist Jane Pauley, who flew to the Valley to meet Abrego-Araiza and hear her story of success first hand.
