Governor David Dewhurst, the 2011 Border Texan of the Year, selected South Texas College's Valley Scholars Program to be one of four recipients of the proceeds from the 2011 Border Texan of the Year Dinner. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has opened up the application process for its national scholarship competition for community college students and recent alumni of community colleges. South Texas College students and alumni are encouraged to submit their application for consideration. South Texas College nursing students Blanca Estella Hernandez and Veronica Bustamante have been awarded $500 scholarships from the Texas Nurses Association District 26 for their academic merit and dedication to the field of nursing. Veterans honored for academic excellence

South Texas College student Rey Leal, who is also an Iraq War vet, was looking for a way to give back to his fellow veterans, but he couldn’t figure out what type of project or initiative would have the most impact. The answer came to him after he and former STC student Jesus Bocanegra led a march to San Antonio to help raise awareness about the health care needs of veterans in the Valley. More than 800 community members celebrated mind, body and spirit during South Texas College’s third annual Harvest of Health. The event, held at STC’s Dr. Ramiro Casso Nursing and Allied Health Campus, was organized by the college’s Community Health Outreach Committee (CHOC), the South Texas Promotores Association and the Mexican Consulate of Mexico in McAllen.
