Arriving at South Texas College as a recent graduate from Sharyland Pioneer High School, Alessandra Romero says having compassion has guided her into her future in the medical profession. “I want to become a nurse one day,” said Romero. “I actually want to be a neonatal nurse in the labor and delivery rooms.   Anna Velez believes in encouraging students to do the best they can in school and learn as much as possible, so they can apply their skills in the workforce. Velez says the challenges in her life have enabled her to make the most out of some extremely tough situations. Born in Weslaco but raised in Florida, Velez said she returned to the Valley in 2014. Almost immediately, she said her lack of education despite her extensive work experience made it difficult finding employment in the area. A natural engineer with a penchant for building things, Horacio Salinas is a hardworking individual who always puts the extra effort and makes it a point to assist others in class. After being out of school for eight years, Lucia Agado says she found herself seeking a profession that would be a satisfying career. A family man and a retired military student, Darrell Flowers is attending South Texas College for his second career. After graduating in 1990, Darrell decided to join the military. Despite being settled into a career in finance, Samuel Trejo says he was inspired by family to take the plunge and pursue his lifelong dream into a career in nursing. Trejo, 30, recently started at South Texas College after getting an accounting degree from the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley because he wanted to do something that made a difference in people’s lives.
