Student of the week: Samuel Trejo

Samuel Trejo

Despite being settled into a career in finance, Samuel Trejo says he was inspired by family to take the plunge and pursue his lifelong dream into a career in nursing.

Trejo, 30, recently started at South Texas College after getting an accounting degree from the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley because he wanted to do something that made a difference in people’s lives. He was accepted into the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program and hopes to work in an intensive care unit (ICU) as a nurse.

Samuel says his brother, Miguel, who started his career as a radiologic technician before returning to STC and obtaining his ADN degree in 2012, inspired him. Miguel worked for four years in ICU before taking a job in hospice.

“My family inspires me to keep going,” Samuel said. “For students, I would like to tell them to try their best. It’s never too late to go back to school and become what you really wanted.”

Top three accomplishments:

“I am proud to be back in school and doing my best”

“My second accomplishment has been getting my accounting degree, because you can always apply business in your career aspirations.”

“My third accomplishment would be working through challenges to accomplish my goals. I have family already in the nursing profession, so that also inspires me to do my best.”
